Books are Weapons – Arm yourself at Bookmarks

Bookmarks is Britain’s biggest socialist bookshop – and we will be moving lock, stock and barrel to Marxism 2009 for the whole of the event.

Don’t miss the opportunity to browse our sections on Marxist Ideas, Black Struggle, Labour History, Women’s Liberation, Palestine, Radical Science and Culture and so much more.

We also have a very popular section of progressive children’s books.

We stock a large collection of CDs and DVDs and will have a section of secondhand books (replenished each day of the event).

Come and find us – we will be located in two rooms off the Student Union Bar in the basement of the Institute of Education and we will be open throughout the event!

Marxism CDs

All the meetings at Marxism 2009 will be recorded and available to buy on CD, often within hours, for £3 each.

Zombie Capitalism: Global crisis and the relevance of Marx
by Chris Harman
£15 Special Offer (normally £16.99)

Chris Harman’s new book looks at how the theories of Marx can explain why crisis is endemic to the system. Marx referred to capitalism as the domination of the dead over the living, the past over the present. He described how the products of people’s labour come to dominate their lives. Capitalism was once an incredibly dynamic system, although it always experienced crises. But since the mid-1970s it has been going through a long phase of crisis, in which booms are interspersed with deeper and deeper slumps. Zombie Capitalism is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the roots of the current crisis and how Marx’s ideas are indispensable for grasping the nature of capitalism as it has been transformed over the last 150 years.

Strike by Name: Diary of a miner during the 1984-5 strike
by Norman Strike
£8

Norman Strike (yes, that’s his real name!) was a striking Durham miner during the epic and bitter yearlong miners’ strike of 1984-5. He kept a diary throughout that year which gives a powerful and honest picture of the impact of the strike on himself and those around him. It captures the explosive militancy of many of the younger miners as they confronted the police, the courts, and sometimes parts of their own union.
